TRIPOLI, 10 November 2020 (Lana) - Amnesty International condemned
the assassination of lawyer Hanan Mohammed al-Barassi in Benghazi on
Tuesday, saying it had "consistently criticized a number of
individuals associated with armed groups in the east of the country."
According to a statement issued by the international organization
published on its official website, "Lawyer Hanan al-Barasi" received
death threats for her and her daughter in the wake of these
criticisms, and announced the day before her death that she intends
to publish a video of the "corruption" of Saddam, the son of Khalifa
Haftar, according to the statement.
The killing of lawyer and human rights activist Hanan al-Barassi is
evidence of the dangers faced by women in Libya who speak politics
and face a wave of abuse and threats on social media without any
investigation, the organization said.
Amnesty International called on the security authorities in the east
of the country to urgently investigate the murder of lawyer Hanan
al-Barasi and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Human Rights Watch condemned the murder of lawyer Hanan al-Barassi,
who said, "This crime reminds her of similar crimes that no one has
been punished for." In a tweet, Human Rights Watch called on security
authorities in the east to hold the perpetrators accountable and
bring them to justice.
