Berlin, 6 October 2020(Lana) UN Secretary General Antonio Guteres
has stressed the need for Libyan parties to shoulder their
responsibilities, and for foreign influential parties to put peace
first.
Speaking to the Berlin ministerial conference co-chaired by the
UN and Germany, Guteres said 'Libya's future is at stake', and urged
all Libyans to work towards a lasting ceasefire, to constructively
contribute to the UN -led political talks, and to put the interests
of Libya first.
He stressed the need to respect the pledges announced by
participants in the Berlin Conference including strict and
inconditional implementation of the UN embargo on weapons to Libya.
Guteres also stressed the importance of restoring Libya's ability
to provide services for its population whose conditions, he said,
have deteriorated not only because of the war but because of rampant
corruption in the country.
The Libyan people had to endure the repercussions of the
conflict, but nevertheless they still face the catastrophic
consequence of a spread of Covid 19.
The Secretary General expressed his shock at the discovery of
mass graves in Tarhuna, and said solving the Libyan crisis remained a
UN priority.
