Tripoli, 16 April 2017(Lana) The President of the Presidency
Council of the Government of National Accord Fayez Al Serraj has said
that Europe did not live to promises to fight illegal migration on
Libyan shores.
'Unfortunately Europe did has not made good on promises to
assist Libya in combating migration, only empty promises, Al Serraj
said in an interview with the German Bild newspaper, during which he
talked about ongoing talks with the European Union over the
assistance needed by the Libyan coast guard.
'We are in dire need for technical assistance to protect our
shores ..the international community should do more to help stability
in Libya, he said.
Al Serraj warned that the demands made by the Government of
National Accord did not get any response thus far, and the result, he
said, would be more traffickers and more migrants.
According to the UNHCR more than 24000 have arrived in Italy from
Libya in the first three months of 2017, compared with 18000 in the
same period in 2016.
Between 800000 and 1 million would be migrants, mostly from
sub-Saharan states, are in Libya in the hope they will be able to
reach Europe by Sea. Most the migrants start their journey in Sabrata
north west of Libya, international organisations say.
