WFP warns that time is running out to prevent famine in the Darfur region of western Sudan

Geneva, May 04, 2024 (LANA) - The United Nations World Food Program has warned that time is running out to prevent famine in the Darfur region, western Sudan, especially with the escalation of fighting in the city of El Fasher in the region.

The program said in a statement on Friday, "Time is running out to prevent famine in Darfur, as the escalation of clashes (between the army and the Rapid Support Forces) in the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state (one of the five states of Darfur), is hampering efforts to deliver food aid to the region."

The UN Program complains that food aid deliveries to Darfur are “interrupted due to fighting and endless bureaucratic obstacles,” without clarifying the nature of these obstacles.

Also noted, that the recent escalation of violence in El Fasher “led to the halt of aid convoys coming from the Tina border crossing in Chad,” a recently opened humanitarian corridor that passes through the capital of North Darfur.

Since early April, the city of El Fasher has witnessed clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which launched massive attacks on villages west of the city.
