Guterres accepts Batili's resignation.

New York, April 17, 2024 (LANA) - The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, accepted the resignation of the Special Representative to Libya, Abdullah Batili, which he announced yesterday, Tuesday.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement today, Wednesday, that Guterres thanked Batili for his efforts to rebuild peace and stability in Libya.

Upon accepting the resignation, Guterres stated that the United Nations will continue to support the political process implemented by the Libyans.

"Batili" had announced in a press conference yesterday that he had submitted his resignation, noting that the situation in Libya had deteriorated in recent months, pointing out that there were two main reasons for this, which were "the efforts of the Libyan parties to continue the status quo" and the regional and international dynamics.

Batili warned that "Libya is on its way to losing its sovereignty" and stressed that the United Nations is trying to prevent this, but "external players are undermining the efforts of the United Nations."
