Tripoli, December 6, 2023 (Lana) The Permanent Representative of Libya to the UN, Taher El-Sonni, called on the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, to coordinate with the Prosecutor and the Libyan Attorney General’s Office in all investigations related to Libya.

During his meeting today in New York, El-Sonni confirmed that the role of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in ongoing investigations is a supportive role and not a substitute for it, in accordance with Libya’s priorities.

According to a tweet by El-Sonni, Khan presented his office’s strategy in order to complete the ongoing investigations in Libya and shared his efforts to produce quick results as soon as possible.

“We also asked about the role of the ICC in investigating the atrocities committed against civilians in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories, which we consider to be war crimes and crimes against humanity that amount to genocide. We stressed the importance of prosecuting those involved and holding them accountable,” El-Sonni said.

“Following that, we coordinated a meeting between the Arab Group and Mr. Khan to brief on ICC work with regards to the situation in the occupied territories, after several countries have submitted referrals to the ICC regarding the situation in Palestine,” he added.
