Tripoli, November 26, 2023 (LANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (INSMIL) today, Sunday, called on the Libyan authorities to respect and protect women and girls in the country and for the involvement of Libyan institutions and political actors in preventing all forms of violence against women, in order to establish an effective legal framework that addresses violence against women and girls, in the private and public spheres, so that they can participate in the electoral process as voters and candidates

The mission expressed in a statement that it stands with Libyan women’s rights defenders in supporting the 16-day campaign to eliminate violence against women and girls, calling on all authorities to promote an environment that respects and protects women and girls in Libya, and for Libyan institutions and political actors to engage in preventing all Forms of violence against women.

The mission noted that recent research by UN Women showed that almost all women members of elected councils whose opinions were surveyed were exposed to at least one form of political violence during or after their election.

These threats - according to the statement - came from armed groups, male elected council members, and members of the local community, and included threats of kidnapping, forced disappearance, online harassment, and verbal and psychological violence.
