The African Union announces the activation of the incident management mechanism to provide support to Libya

Addis Ababa, September 17, 2023 (LANA) - The African Union announced the activation of an incident management mechanism with the aim of providing support to Libya in efforts to confront the repercussions of the massive floods that struck the east of the country, including the deployment of a team of experts to provide assistance.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, said in a statement today, Sunday, that within the framework of the Union’s support for the national response in Libya, the Commission’s Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, in partnership with a number of agencies affiliated with the Union, including the Department of Health and Social Affairs, Humanitarian Affairs, by activating the incident management mechanism, including holding regular meetings with the Permanent Libyan Mission to the African Union in Addis Ababa.

The statement added that the Commission will also deploy a team of experts from several sectors, including the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, the Department of Health, and the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in order to continue providing support to the State of Libya.

Faki renewed the call to member states and international partners to “urgently increase support, in solidarity with the state and people of Libya,” in order to meet the increasing humanitarian needs in the wake of the devastation that struck the country.
