European Union invites Al-Koni to chair conference on cross-border cooperation between Libya and the countries of the Sahel region.

Tripoli, 28 September 2022 (Lana) Vice-President of the Presidency Council Musa Al Koni, at a meeting on Tuesday, with the Ambassador of the European Union to Libya, José Sabadell, and the Head of the European Union Border Assistance Mission EUBAM, Natalina Sia, received an official invitation from the European Union to chair the "Conference on Cross-Border Cooperation between Libya and the Sahel region, which is scheduled to be held in November in Tunis.

   The invitation came in appreciation by the European Union of the effort made by Al-Koni through his visits to Libya's neighboring countries, in search of effective solutions to various problems that threaten the stability of southern Libya and neighboring areas, and the completion of the presentation of his strategic project towards possible solutions in this direction in the European capital Brussels, stressing the importance of joint regional cooperation, and the activation of previous agreements between neighboring countries.

The conference will discuss importance of developing the regional dimension in respect to considering the regional issues, and promoting cross-border dialogue and cooperation between the Sahel countries and Libya.

In addition to a more comprehensive policy approach and combating illegal immigration, the EU Ambassador to Libya reiterated the EU's keenness to help Libya control its borders and support development programs on both sides of the common border, which would lead to stability in these areas. Al-Koni stressed importance of returning to the former provincial system in Libya, which divids the geography of the country into governorates, and the decentralization system will contribute to good governance and return to the former provincial system.
