New York, November 5, 2026 (LANA) – The UN Security Council announced on Wednesday the extension of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) mandate for one year, until October 31, 2027. The Council reaffirmed its full support for the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya and Head of the Mission, Hanna Tetteh, in her efforts to promote an inclusive political process.
According to the mission in Tripoli, the Council—through this resolution—noted the steps taken by the mission to implement the recommendations of the strategic review. It encouraged the mission to continue its work, keeping the facilitation of a political solution to the Libyan conflict at the core of its mandate. The Council also urged the mission to strengthen its presence more consistently across Libya—including through targeted expansions in Benghazi, Sabha, and Sirte—while ensuring that such reorganization remains cost-neutral and within existing resource limits. Furthermore, it called for increased engagement in eastern and southern Libya with key stakeholders to support reunification efforts.
In the context of implementing the strategic review recommendations, the Council also requested that the mission explore all avenues to enhance efficiency and reallocate existing resources—including by setting priorities and restructuring tasks and resources as appropriate. The Council called upon Libyan political institutions and key Libyan stakeholders to engage fully, transparently, and in good faith—without preconditions and without delay—and to adopt the necessary compromises to advance negotiations that are Libyan-led and Libyan-owned, facilitated by the mission, with the aim of holding free, fair, transparent, and inclusive national presidential and parliamentary elections.
