Tripoli 2 November 2026 (Lana) The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, affirmed that the UNSMIL will continue to support a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned inclusive political process that consults with all key stakeholders across the Libyan political spectrum.
This came in her statement following the Secretary Council’s decision to extend UNSMIL's mandate for an additional year, until 31 October 2027, according to UNSMIL in a tweet.
Tetteh expressed the Mission's appreciation for the continued support of the UN Security Council and other international partners. She also acknowledged the concerns expressed by others over the political stalemate and the progress made in the UN-facilitated political process.
“We will adapt our efforts and continue to develop formats for convening and discussion aimed at achieving unified institutions through inclusive participation, to achieve lasting stability, and elections that restore the Libyan people’s right to choose their leaders,” Tetteh said.
“We know the Libyan people have been waiting, and we are committed to working with all political stakeholders to achieve these objectives. We encourage all political actors and relevant institutions to work with us and assume the responsibility to respond to the expectations of the people they serve to choose their leaders, and to take the difficult decisions needed to move the country forward,” she stated.
“It is time for leadership, compromise, and a sense of urgency that delivers concrete action, real progress, and improves the lives of Libyans,” she added.
