The Libyan Presidential Council expresses its categorical rejection of the U.S. President’s insulting remarks regarding the Libyan people.

Tripoli, October 25, 2026 (LANA) – The Presidential Council has expressed its categorical rejection of the insulting remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Libya and its people. The Council asserted that such statements constitute an unacceptable transgression and an affront to the dignity of a people who will not tolerate being treated with contempt or used as fodder for political posturing, regardless of the source or motives behind such remarks.

In a statement issued today, the Council declared that Libya—a nation deeply rooted in history, whose people have written epic tales of struggle for freedom and made great sacrifices in the face of colonialism and terrorism—is far too significant to be defined by its current hardships, and its stature is far too elevated to be diminished by an insult. The Council further noted that a nation’s worth is not measured by the crises it encounters along its path, nor can the glories of a people be erased by a fleeting, offhand remark. The statement continued: "Perhaps the United States’ own memory is sufficient to understand the significance of Libya. From the Treaties of Peace and Friendship of 1796 and 1805, to the mast of the American frigate *Philadelphia*—preserved in Tripoli as a testament to an indelible history—and the 'shores of Tripoli' immortalized in the United States Marine Corps Hymn, there are enduring reminders that Libya is no mere footnote in American history."

The Presidential Council emphasized that friendship between nations can only be sustained through mutual respect, and that the responsibility of leadership entails upholding the dignity of peoples, not undermining it.

The statement further noted that the Presidential Council has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity to summon the head of the U.S. diplomatic mission to Libya and convey a clear, formal protest regarding the remarks that were made.

The Council affirmed that the dignity of Libya and its people is neither negotiable nor subject to infringement. It indicated that it will continue to pursue this matter through diplomatic channels—in accordance with its national responsibilities and established international norms—to secure an explicit apology, a rectification of the statements made, and the restoration of the mutual respect that ought to characterize the relationship between the two countries.
