Tripoli, October 21, 2026 (LANA) – The Libyan Audit Bureau has announced the suspension of its operations until further notice—pending the resolution of the circumstances that necessitated this decision and the restoration of a safe and suitable environment for work—following an armed storming of its headquarters today, Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the Bureau.
The leadership, members, and staff of the Audit Bureau condemned the armed incursion, which was intended to impose a deputy head for the Bureau without any legal basis—a point corroborated by correspondence from both the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, the statement noted.
The statement further indicated that the incursion endangered the safety of the staff and rendered the work environment unstable and insecure.
"In order to safeguard the independence of the Bureau and ensure it can exercise its oversight mandates in accordance with prevailing legislation," the statement declared, "it has been decided to suspend operations until further notice, until the underlying causes are resolved and a safe, suitable environment for work is restored."
The Bureau emphasized that, as a supreme oversight institution tasked with protecting public funds and monitoring the state’s financial conduct, it cannot fulfill its duties under security conditions where outcomes are dictated by force or where legal procedures are supplanted by armed coercion.
The Bureau stressed that this situation demands a clear institutional stance—one that preserves the Bureau’s independence and upholds the authority of the law and the integrity of state institutions.
The Audit Bureau affirmed that this measure is taken out of respect for the sanctity of state institutions, and to avoid any actions that might compromise their safety or independence.
