Tripoli, October 20, 2026 (LANA) – Ulrika Richardson, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator in Libya, met with the Chairman of the National Oil Corporation (NOC), Masoud Suleiman, to discuss the challenges facing the country’s oil and fuel sectors, as well as ways to protect oil resources—the primary source of national revenue.
In a statement posted on its official page, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) noted that the meeting, held yesterday, Monday, addressed the importance of combating fuel smuggling and preventing the misuse of public resources for purposes other than those intended.
Richardson emphasized the necessity of enabling the National Oil Corporation to carry out its duties effectively, free from unwarranted interference or pressure exerted by armed groups. She further stressed the importance of safeguarding critical oil infrastructure against disruption or political exploitation.
The two sides discussed ways to coordinate international support to assist Libyan institutions in addressing shared priorities and finding practical solutions to the challenges facing the sector.
The United Nations underscored that protecting Libya’s oil wealth is not only vital for supporting economic stability but also serves as a fundamental pillar for building public trust and ensuring that the nation’s resources are directed toward the benefit of all Libyans.
