New York, October 14, 2026 (LANA) – The British representative to the UN Security Council emphasized the need for the Council to uphold the core mandate of the UN mission in Libya: facilitating a political solution to reunify institutions and making progress toward a unified executive authority to achieve a sustainable political settlement.
In her address to the Security Council during its session on Libya this Wednesday, the British representative stated that a unified executive authority is crucial for supporting Libya's political track. She welcomed the progress made in the "4+4" agreement regarding the amendment of electoral laws and the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections within 24 months.
She added that Libya stands at a critical juncture regarding the roadmap, noting that recent progress has offered a way out of years of political deadlock—provided that commitments are translated into practical steps.
She pointed out that commitments on paper must be translated into tangible action, noting that recent developments demonstrate the potential for progress, and called upon Libyan parties to fulfill their obligations.
The British representative also emphasized the need to strengthen judicial independence and ensure accountability for cases of enforced disappearance, arbitrary detention, attacks on civilians, and the targeting of infrastructure.
