Tripoli, October 8, 2026 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has reaffirmed its commitment to continued engagement with the House of Representatives, its new leadership body, and all its members.
In a statement on its official page this Thursday, the Mission announced it would continue working with the legislative body to advance the UN-facilitated political roadmap. This effort aims to unify institutions, implement urgent reforms, and hold elections within the timeframe stipulated in the agreement signed during the "mini-meeting" on August 30.
The Mission emphasized its commitment to collaborating with all relevant Libyan parties and international partners to achieve this goal.
The Mission noted that it had monitored the two sessions of the House of Representatives held in Benghazi earlier this week. Regarding the October 5 session—which the Mission understood was attended by 102 members—it noted that 98 members voted to amend the House's internal regulations and approve a rotating presidency with a maximum term of 12 months. The Mission also acknowledged the second session held on October 6, attended by at least 111 members, during which a new leadership for the House was elected. The Mission takes note of the election of Mr. Al-Sahin Abdul-Nabi as Speaker of the House, as well as the election of a new leadership body.
