New York – October 4, 2026 (LANA) – Minister of Water Resources of the Government of National Unity, Hosni Oweidan, participated in a high-level meeting held in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, under the theme: “Water for Humanity – Science-Based Leadership in an Era of Climate and Development Transformation.”

The meeting was held at the invitation of the Permanent Representative to the United Nations of the Intergovernmental Agency for Water and Sanitation in All Africa (WSA).

The meeting was attended by a number of ministers, government officials, ambassadors, and experts, as well as representatives of international organizations and international partners. Representatives of the State of Libya’s Mission to the United Nations were also present, according to the Ministry of Water Resources of the Government of National Unity.

The Minister of Water Resources delivered Libya’s statement at the meeting, emphasizing that water is not merely a natural resource, but the foundation of life and a cornerstone of health, food security, economic development, stability, and peace.

He stressed that achieving water security is no longer the responsibility of a single sector or country, but has become a collective responsibility requiring international, regional, and national partnerships based on science, knowledge, and innovation. He noted that building resilience to climate change in the water sector is no longer an option, but rather a developmental and security necessity.

The Minister called for effective and actionable water partnerships based on interconnected areas including water security; water supply and sanitation; adaptation; investment and financing; science and innovation; and capacity building.

He also highlighted Libya’s experience in transferring water from desert areas, integrated water resources management, and the management of shared groundwater basins.

The Ministry explained that the meeting discussed a number of priority issues in the water and sanitation sector, as well as challenges related to water security and sustainable development. It also addressed the importance of strengthening international partnerships, exchanging expertise, and supporting countries in addressing growing pressures on water resources, thereby contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation.
