Al-Menfi meets with the Chairperson of the AU Commission

Tripoli, October 1, 2026 (LANA) – The Head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, received the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmod Ali Youssouf, today, Thursday, at the Council’s headquarters in Tripoli. The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for African Affairs, Fathallah Al-Zani.

The Council stated on its official page that the meeting addressed the trajectory of relations between Libya and the African Union, as well as ways to develop and elevate them to broader levels of coordination and partnership. The discussion aimed to serve mutual interests and enhance Libya's contribution to the system of joint African action, alongside coordinating positions and visions regarding issues on the agendas of regional and international multilateral forums.

The two sides discussed developments across the African continent and a number of regional and international issues related to security and stability, foremost among them the national reconciliation process in Libya.

During the meeting, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission commended the efforts exerted by the Presidential Council regarding national reconciliation, affirming the Commission's continued commitment to supporting this process through the Presidential Council and the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation that it has produced. The Media Office stated that the discussions addressed the issue of irregular migration and its associated challenges, as well as ways to combat human trafficking and smuggling networks. Additionally, the talks covered efforts to counter terrorism and cut off its funding sources, within the framework of a joint African approach to support state security and stability.

Al-Menfi emphasized the importance of continued political consultation and the exchange of views on priority issues, as well as the development of coordination channels with the African Union. These steps aim to strengthen Libya’s presence within the Union’s institutions and support African approaches grounded in national solutions and respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity.
