The Foreign Ministries of the Government of National Unity and Greece affirm the importance of making the Mediterranean a space for cooperation and peace

Tripoli, September 28, 2026 (LANA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity and the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation and coordination between the countries on both shores of the Mediterranean. This aims to transform the Mediterranean basin into a space for cooperation, security, and peace, while supporting stability, development, and people-to-people ties in a manner that serves their shared interests.

This statement was made during a meeting held today, Monday, in Tripoli between the Director of the European Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abubakr Al-Taweel, and the Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to Libya, Ioannis Stamatekos. The two sides discussed bilateral relations and ways to enhance them, alongside a number of issues of mutual interest.

The meeting also addressed the outcomes of the visit by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation delegation to Greece. Discussions focused on ways to bolster cooperation between the Ministry’s Institute for Diplomatic Studies and the Greek Diplomatic Academy, as well as working on drafting a memorandum of understanding between the two sides to be exchanged through established diplomatic channels.

Furthermore, the two sides discussed continuing coordination and consultation on issues of mutual interest to strengthen relations between Libya and Greece and support prospects for cooperation between the two countries.
