Tripoli, 23 September 2026 (Lana) The Permanent Representative of Libya to the United Nations, Taher El-Sonni, stressed the importance of the national milestone represented by Libya’s candidacy for membership of the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–2029 term, noting the unified institutional support for this candidacy despite existing challenges.
In a tweet yesterday evening, El-Sonni said that this broad support sends a message that there is a genuine desire for Libya to return to the international arena and to become an active state at the Security Council table, rather than merely being an issue for discussion.
He added that Libya will return to the international arena, concluding his tweet by saying, "Libya will return.”
