Libya participates in the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly

New York, September 22, 2026 (LANA) – Libya participated today, Tuesday, in the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, held at the UN headquarters in New York. The Libyan delegation was headed by the President of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Al-Manfi, and included the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Taher Al-Baour.

The Minister of Youth in the Government of National Unity, Haitham Al-Zahaf, also participated in the opening session, along with a number of advisors to the Presidential Council and members of the Libyan delegation, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Libya's participation in the high-level general debate of the new session, which brings together leaders, heads of government, ministers, and representatives of UN member states, aims to discuss the most prominent regional and international issues and challenges, and to strengthen multilateral cooperation in addressing the crises facing the world.

The day's proceedings witnessed a high-level attendance from leaders and heads of government, and speeches and interventions by heads of state and government are scheduled to continue throughout the days of the general debate.

The general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly will be held from September 22 to 28, under the chairmanship of the President of the General Assembly for the current session, Dr. Khalil Rahman, with the participation of representatives from the 193 member states.

The current session is themed “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers Results for All,” reflecting the international organization’s efforts to strengthen international cooperation, support the Sustainable Development Goals, and advance joint efforts for peace, dignity, and equality.

The session is expected to address a range of international issues, including regional and international crises and conflicts, strengthening international peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, global health, international cooperation, artificial intelligence, and the reform and development of the multilateral system.

The General Assembly meetings also provide an opportunity for participating delegations to hold bilateral and multilateral meetings, discuss issues of common interest, and enhance cooperation and relations between states and international and regional organizations.

Libya's participation in these meetings underscores its presence in international forums and its commitment to maintaining communication with the international community. It aims to raise issues and concerns related to Libya, as well as explore ways to support stability and enhance international cooperation.

The Libyan delegation is scheduled to continue its participation in a number of high-level meetings and events held alongside the General Assembly sessions in the coming days.
