The House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee calls for unified diplomatic efforts and international mobilization to support Libya's candidacy for the Security Council.

Benghazi, September 22, 2026 (LANA) – The House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee affirmed that Libya's candidacy for a seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028-2029 term is a significant national and diplomatic achievement, reflecting the Libyan state's aspiration to strengthen its presence and restore its active role in regional and international forums.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the committee stressed the importance of this candidacy as a unifying national priority, requiring coordinated efforts among state institutions and a unified diplomatic approach to serve the country's best interests, free from polarization and divisions. The committee affirmed its support for this candidacy.

The statement also emphasized the importance of garnering regional and international support for Libya's candidacy, which would enhance its standing within the United Nations system and enable it to contribute effectively and responsibly to efforts to maintain international peace and security and defend the causes and interests of its Arab, African, and Islamic neighbors.

The committee said in its statement that Libya’s membership in the Security Council represents a national and international responsibility, and an opportunity to affirm the presence of the Libyan state as an active partner in international work, expressing hope that this entitlement will be supported by all national institutions and forces, in a manner befitting the name of Libya, its status and the aspirations of its people.
