El-Sonni Affirms Libya’s Right to Run for UN Security Council Seat for 2028–2029.

Tripoli, 20 September 2026 (Lana) Libya’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Taher El-Sonni, affirmed that Libya’s natural turn to run for membership of the UN Security Council is for the 2028–2029 term, explaining that the mechanism for nominating the African seat is based on rotation among five regions: North, East, Central, West, and Southern Africa.
El-Sonni stated in a tweet that Libya has run for membership of the Security Council only twice in its history as a representative of the North African region, the latest being for the 2008–2009 term, noting that the other countries subsequently took their turns according to the sequence established under the rotation mechanism.
“Libya confirmed its candidacy for the 2028–2029 term since 2020, and it has not jumped ahead of any other country’s turn but rather respects the principle of rotation,” he said, stressing that Libya’s natural turn in this cycle is to run for the aforementioned term.
El-Sonni noted that those who question Libya’s right to run and attempt to present a different context regarding this mechanism should reconsider their position, considering that relinquishing the country’s right for narrow personal and political reasons warrants a reassessment of the motives, affiliations, and loyalties behind such a position.
