Naji Issa discusses supporting monetary and financial stability with the Governor of the Bank of England

London | September 16, 2026 (LANA) – The Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, Naji Issa, met today, Wednesday, with the Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, in London. The meeting focused on ways to enhance banking and financial cooperation and exchange expertise in areas such as monetary policy, financial stability, and economic reform.

According to the Central Bank of Libya’s official page, the discussion covered current economic and financial developments and economic reform efforts aimed at bolstering fiscal sustainability. It also explored opportunities to leverage international experiences to develop the banking sector, improve its efficiency, and strengthen its institutional capabilities.

For his part, the Governor of the Central Bank of Libya outlined the Bank's efforts regarding financial inclusion—specifically the development of electronic payment systems and services and the expansion of modern payment methods—to increase access to banking and financial services for citizens and institutions.

The two sides also discussed the management of foreign reserves and assets, exchanging views on international best practices in this field. This included exploring suitable options to boost the Central Bank of Libya’s gold reserves as part of a balanced policy to diversify assets and support monetary and financial stability.

The Governor of the Bank of England commended the efforts and progress made by the Central Bank of Libya across various banking and financial sectors, acknowledging the challenges and exceptional circumstances facing the Libyan monetary authority amidst the ongoing political and institutional division.

Concluding the meeting, both parties emphasized the importance of continued communication, knowledge sharing, and strengthened cooperation between the Central Bank of Libya and the Bank of England. Such collaboration aims to support institutional capacity building, modernize the Libyan banking sector, and enhance its integration into the international financial system.
