The United Nations and the League of Arab States discuss supporting development and strengthening economic governance in Libya

Tripoli, September 15, 2026 (LANA) – Georgette Gagnon, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator in Libya, met yesterday with the League of Arab States Ambassador to Libya, Sheikh Al-Mukhtar Mahmoud, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in support of Libya's development priorities.

According to the UN mission’s official page today, Tuesday, discussions focused on economic governance, strengthening national institutions, and driving inclusive economic development across Libya. The two sides also exchanged views on leveraging the experiences of neighboring Arab countries in tackling illicit economies, human trafficking networks, and smuggling, thereby contributing to Libya's territorial integrity and sustainable development.

In light of recent incidents targeting UN premises, the two sides also discussed migration-related challenges facing Libya and UN efforts to support national authorities in addressing these issues.

Gagnon reiterated that the United Nations has never participated, nor is it currently participating, in the resettlement of migrants or foreign nationals in Libya, according to the same source.

She also affirmed the UN's commitment to continuing close collaboration with regional and international partners—including the League of Arab States—to support peace and stability and to strengthen effective governance in Libya.
