Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece reaffirm support for a Libyan-led process and an end to the division.

Tripoli, 9 September 2026 (Lana), Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece reaffirmed their support for Libya’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity, and called for an inclusive, Libyan-led, and Libyan-owned political process that would lead to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections and end the division, while stressing the need for the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries from the country.

This came in the joint declaration of the trilateral El Alamein Summit, which brought together Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the Egyptian city of El Alamein on Tuesday.

The leaders of the three countries reaffirmed their support for United Nations efforts to hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya as soon as possible, while respecting the role of national institutions in a manner that preserves the country’s unity and sovereignty and serves the security and interests of its people.

Speaking at a joint press conference following the summit, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said he had discussed the situation in Libya with the Cypriot president and Greek prime minister, stressing the importance of supporting a “Libyan-Libyan” process leading to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, respecting the role of national institutions and ending the division.

El-Sisi stressed the need for the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries from Libya in a manner that preserves its unity and sovereignty and serves the security and interests of its people.

At the conclusion of the summit, the three leaders reiterated their commitment to supporting peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, reaffirming their continued coordination and cooperation on regional issues of common interest.
