The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Unity calls on citizens to refrain from any actions targeting the headquarters of international missions.

Tripoli, September 8, 2026 (LANA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity called on all citizens to refrain from any actions targeting the premises, properties, vehicles, or personnel of international organizations, UN agencies, and diplomatic and consular missions.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Ministry said that freedom of expression and peaceful protest do not justify storming, vandalism, threats, or endangering the safety of individuals, urging citizens to resort to the appropriate authorities. The statement added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring any acts or attempts to attack the premises, offices, and properties of international organizations, UN agencies, and diplomatic and consular missions accredited to the State of Libya.

The Ministry affirmed that these premises, properties, and personnel enjoy legal protection under applicable national legislation and international agreements, and that any intrusion, damage, threat, or attack constitutes a serious violation warranting legal accountability. This protection is based, among other legal frameworks, on Articles 104 and 105 of the Charter of the United Nations, the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, particularly Article 22, as well as provisions of the Libyan Penal Code, including Articles 221 and 222, and Law No. 3 of 2014 on Combating Terrorism, according to the statement. The Ministry revealed that it refers all incidents and reports it receives regarding these practices to the Public Prosecutor's Office to take the necessary legal measures, open investigations, determine responsibilities, and hold accountable anyone proven to be involved in, inciting, or assisting in these acts, in accordance with applicable legislation and without prejudice to international obligations. The Ministry reiterated the Government of National Unity's commitment to protecting the premises and properties of these missions accredited to Libya, and to working with the relevant national authorities to ensure their security, reflecting Libya's respect for international law and its international obligations, and preserving its relations with the international community and its national interests.
