Government of National Unity Reveals Arrest and Dismantling of Sabotage Cell Involving Libyans and Foreign Nationals

Tripoli, September 6, 2026 (LANA) — The Government of National Unity has revealed the arrest and dismantling of a sabotage cell comprising Libyans and foreign nationals that was involved in operations targeting Libyan national assets.

In a statement issued today, Sunday, the government said that the results of the qualitative security and intelligence operation carried out by the Ministry of Defense led to the arrest of five individuals, both Libyans and foreigners, and the dismantling of an organized sabotage cell involved in attacks using suicide drones targeting oil storage tanks in Tripoli and Zawiya, as well as the Zawiya power station.

The ministry also thwarted other plots that were on the verge of being carried out, most notably an intended attack on the South Tripoli Power Station, in addition to vital facilities and political, security, and military leaders.

According to the statement, the information uncovered so far confirms that the country was not facing isolated incidents or random acts, but rather a broad and interconnected sabotage plot, involving multiple parties, tools, and targets. The attacks were systematically directed against infrastructure, energy sources, and oil and electricity facilities, targeting Libyan national assets and facilities directly linked to their security and livelihoods, at an extremely sensitive time when the country was experiencing significant pressure on public services during the summer.

The government stressed that dismantling this cell is not the end of the operation, but the beginning of uncovering the full network and its extensions. The pursuit will continue relentlessly until the remaining perpetrators are apprehended and those who planned, financed, supported, facilitated, incited, or provided cover for these acts are identified.

The state, the government said, will “strike with an iron fist” against anyone whose involvement in this plot is established by the investigations. No status, position, or military rank will prevent accountability and pursuit, whether inside or outside the country.

In concluding its statement, the government reassured Libyans that their security and national assets are a red line. It said that, once the preliminary investigations are completed, it will present to the local and international public the details uncovered, the scale and extent of the plot, and the identities of the parties involved and those supporting it. Legal and judicial measures will be taken against them without exception.
