The Egyptian and Tunisian foreign ministers stressed the need for a political settlement with Libyan ownership and leadership leading to presidential and parliamentary elections

Cairo – September 6, 2026 (LANA) – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty and his Tunisian counterpart, Mohamed Ali Nafti, affirmed on Sunday the importance of preserving Libya's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, safeguarding its national institutions, and pushing for a comprehensive political settlement under Libyan ownership and leadership that leads to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.

This came during their meeting on the sidelines of the 7th Conference of Cooperation Agencies of Member States of the Islamic Development Bank, held in Cairo, according to the official page of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Abdel-Aty emphasized the importance of continuing coordination between Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria within the framework of the tripartite mechanism of neighboring countries regarding Libya, and maintaining its regular meetings as an important framework for coordinating the positions of neighboring countries and supporting efforts aimed at achieving security and stability in Libya.

The meeting also addressed the importance of continuing coordination and consultation between the two countries within the framework of the League of Arab States, especially in light of Tunisia assuming the presidency of the League's Council. This coordination aims to strengthen joint Arab action and coordinate positions on the issues and challenges facing the region, and to contribute to supporting security and stability in Arab countries. The two ministers also discussed ways to enhance cooperation and coordination between Egypt and Tunisia in the African continent, and to benefit from the expertise and capabilities available in both countries to support development efforts and strengthen South-South cooperation, as well as to continue coordination in African and international forums in a way that serves the interests of African countries and peoples.
