The Arab League: The current stage requires building on everything that would bring the positions of the Libyans closer together

Tripoli, September 2, 2026 (LANA) – The League of Arab States affirmed that it will intensify its contacts and consultations with various Libyan parties, relevant Arab states, and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in the coming period, with the aim of strengthening opportunities for consensus, bridging differences, and advancing the political process towards ending the division and unifying institutions.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the League said it is closely following recent developments related to the political process in Libya, particularly the signing by participants in the “4+4” mini-meeting of an agreement concerning the implementation of the first two phases of the political roadmap facilitated by UNSMIL.

The League explained that the agreement was signed during a ceremony held in Tripoli on August 30, in which it participated through its office in the Libyan capital.

It indicated that these efforts aim to enhance opportunities for reconciliation, bridge the gaps between Libyans, and build upon all that would create the conditions for a transition to a more stable phase.

The Arab League stressed the importance of ensuring that current efforts lead to ending the division, unifying institutions, and achieving the desired political and electoral milestones. She emphasized the necessity for the political process to remain "Libyan-led and Libyan-owned," and to be based on broad national consensus, thus guaranteeing Libya's unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independent national decision-making.
