The electricity company pledges to present the results of the investigation into the partial blackout that occurred in the western section of the electrical grid

Tripoli, August 31, 2026 (LANA) – The General Electricity Company announced it will launch a thorough and comprehensive technical investigation to determine the causes of the partial blackout experienced by the western circuit breaker of the electrical grid, and whether it was due to technical malfunctions or a deliberate act.

In a statement issued late Sunday night, the company said that at 1:28 AM, the western circuit breaker of the electrical grid experienced a sudden and severe disruption, coinciding with the tripping of the Misrata-Khoms 400 kV circuit and the Bir al-Ghanam-Ruways circuit. This resulted in a sharp drop in the grid frequency from 50 Hz to approximately 47.5 Hz within a short period, leading to an imbalance between production and load and causing a partial blackout.

The company confirmed that initial operational data indicates that the sudden outage of transmission circuits was the direct cause of the network disruption. The nature and timing of these events necessitate a thorough and comprehensive technical investigation to determine their causes and ascertain whether they resulted from technical malfunctions, external interference, or deliberate acts.

The company pointed out that this blackout comes amidst recent unauthorized tampering and interference with some substations and transmission circuits. These practices pose a significant threat to the security and stability of the electrical grid and could lead to cascading failures, causing generating units, substations, and transmission circuits to go offline. The company emphasized that the safety of the transmission network and substations is no less important than the availability of generating capacity. Any failure or sudden outage of the main transmission circuits limits the network's ability to transmit and distribute power and maintain frequency, and could lead to widespread disruptions regardless of the available generating capacity.

The company stated that while its engineers, technicians, and workers continue to work around the clock to restore stability and maintain the integrity of the electrical grid, it affirms that technical investigations are underway with full transparency and responsibility. The company will analyze recordings from protection and control systems, the sequence of operational events, and determine responsibilities based on the technical findings. It pledged to present the final investigation results to the Libyan people with complete transparency as soon as the investigations are completed. The company emphasized that no negligence, interference, or attack proven to have contributed to endangering the electrical grid and the Libyan people's resources will be covered up.

In closing, the company stressed that it will take, in coordination with the relevant authorities, all necessary technical and legal measures to protect generation and transmission stations, transmission lines, and control centers, considering them sovereign facilities that directly impact the security and stability of the country.
