Dbeibah emphasizes the importance of opening a new phase of relations between Libya and Syria

Tripoli – August 30, 2026 (LANA) – Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah of the Government of National Unity received Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and his accompanying delegation on Sunday, as part of efforts to strengthen communication between the two countries and explore ways to develop bilateral relations.

The Prime Minister's media office stated that the meeting addressed reactivating Libyan-Syrian cooperation frameworks, raising the level of diplomatic representation, and revitalizing the work of the Joint Higher Committee. Discussions also covered economic, investment, and trade cooperation, as well as addressing several outstanding financial issues and dues between institutions in both countries.

The two sides also discussed security cooperation and counterterrorism efforts, the situation of the two communities and consular services, and the cases of prisoners, detainees, refugees, and internally displaced persons. The reopening of the Syrian consulate in Benghazi was also discussed.

During the meeting, Dbeibah emphasized the importance of opening a new phase in Libyan-Syrian relations, based on shared interests and practical cooperation, and addressing outstanding issues in a way that benefits the citizens of both countries.
