Al-Koni: It is time for dialogue to lead to a decision and for agreement to turn into action that achieves its goal at the ballot box.

Tripoli, August 30, 2026 (LANA) – Presidential Council member Musa Al-Koni affirmed that stagnation and waiting are no longer options for Libya, stressing that the time has come for dialogue to lead to a decision, for the agreement to be translated into action, and for the political process to reach its conclusion at the ballot box.

Al-Koni stated during the signing ceremony of the agreement document of the mini-meeting held today, Sunday, in Tripoli, that his participation comes in support of a political opportunity that must be preserved and built upon, moving Libya from managing division to ending it, and from waiting for elections to actually progressing towards them.

Al-Koni commended the efforts of the UN envoy and the members of the mini-meeting for their sense of responsibility in addressing long-standing issues, most notably the restructuring of the High National Elections Commission and addressing the outstanding matters within the constitutional and legal framework necessary for holding presidential and parliamentary elections.

He explained that the (4+4) mini-meeting process contributed to breaking the deadlock and bridging the gaps between previously divergent positions. He considered this political value to be preserved and built upon, and that the success of the meeting's outcomes begins with referring them to the relevant Libyan institutions. Each institution, within its jurisdiction, would then study, adopt, and implement the referred proposals in accordance with the applicable constitutional and legal frameworks.

Al-Koni stated that signing documents the agreement reached by the parties, while implementation demonstrates the will to implement it. He affirmed his support for any outcome that brings the election date closer, unifies state institutions, and closes the chapter on transitional phases without reproducing them under a new name.

He emphasized that the unification of Libya will not be complete without the participation of its three regions in shaping its future. He stressed that the south is not a marginal element in the equation of the state, but rather a cornerstone of its unity and security, and a full partner in its decisions and future.

Presidential Council member Al-Koni called for elections to be the culmination of the transitional phase, not a postponed item in a new phase, and for a unified state to be the outcome of this process, not merely a slogan repeated in statements. He emphasized that what Libya needs today is a national will to translate what has been agreed upon from text to effect, from signature to implementation, and to move the country from division to statehood, and from the legitimacy of the transition to a legitimacy granted by the Libyan people through their vote.
