European Countries and the United States Praise Libyan Agreement on Restructuring the Board of the Electoral Commission and the Electoral Framework

Tripoli, August 26, 2026 (LANA) – France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Malta, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America welcomed the agreement reached by the Libyan parties within the Small Group on restructuring the Board of the High National Elections Commission and the electoral framework, during meetings held in Tunis on August 20.

The signatory countries, in a joint statement published by the British Embassy in Libya on its official page, urged all Libyan stakeholders to support the agreement and work toward its implementation, describing it as an important and credible step toward holding inclusive and transparent national elections and unifying state institutions.

The countries praised the commitment of the Libyan participants and their willingness to bridge divisions, expressing their anticipation of the final signing of the agreement and of building on the progress achieved during the meetings held in Rome and Tunis as a basis for further settlement and confidence-building, in support of Libya’s stability, unity, and prosperity.

They reaffirmed their continued support for the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Libya, Hanna Tetteh, to facilitate a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, reiterating their commitment to Libya’s sovereignty, independence, territorial unity, and territorial integrity.
