Libyan-international cooperation to support the unification and reform of the security sector and enhance stability in the country

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, August 26, 2026 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) held a meeting in Tripoli last Sunday of the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) Working Group, with the participation of several international partners, the Libyan National Security Council, and a local mediator. The meeting focused on community security and stability priorities, as well as the reunification and reform of the security sector in the country.

UNSMIL explained on its official Facebook page on Wednesday that the meeting discussed the implementation of the National Security Council's vision, as outlined in its plan to reduce community violence. The discussion emphasized practical steps including local mediation, early warning systems, and preventative approaches to protect civilians and critical infrastructure, in addition to countering hate speech and disinformation.

Participants stressed the importance of strengthening coordination among Libyan security, judicial, and community institutions, and continuing to support national efforts aimed at unifying the military and security sectors, consolidating stability, protecting civilians, and promoting social cohesion.

The Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) Working Group serves as a technical coordination and advisory platform to support national efforts in addressing the challenges posed by armed groups and societal violence, and to promote long-term stability and security sector reform, thereby strengthening national ownership and supporting efforts to consolidate security, stability, and national cohesion.
