Libyan-Iraqi Joint Committee Holds Meetings in Baghdad

Baghdad, August 24, 2026 (LANA) – The Libyan-Iraqi Joint Committee held meetings in Baghdad today, Monday, chaired by Taher Al-Baour, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the Government of National Unity. The Iraqi side was headed by Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. Several officials and representatives from relevant bodies and institutions from both countries were also in attendance.

The committee's work focused on ways to develop bilateral relations between Libya and Iraq and enhance joint cooperation in various fields, particularly political, economic, and security matters. They also discussed a number of files and issues of common interest and exchanged views on relevant regional and international developments.

The two sides also discussed mechanisms for strengthening political coordination and consultation, activating agreements and memoranda of understanding signed between the two countries, and following up on the implementation of understandings reached. This aims to open new horizons for cooperation and partnership and strengthen the common interests of the two countries and their brotherly peoples.

At the conclusion of the committee's work, a number of new agreements, memoranda of understanding, and executive programs were signed between relevant authorities in both countries. These covered diverse fields, including political, economic, trade, and investment cooperation, as well as security, transportation, education, culture, health, and other priority sectors. This reflects the desire of both sides to move bilateral relations to a more effective and expansive stage.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both sides emphasized the importance of these agreements and memoranda of understanding forming a practical framework for developing bilateral cooperation and translating shared understandings into projects and executive programs that benefit both countries and their brotherly peoples.

The meetings of the joint committee, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, come within the framework of Libya and Iraq's commitment to strengthening their bilateral relations and activating institutional cooperation mechanisms, after the committee's work was suspended for nearly a quarter of a century. This lays the foundation for a new phase of coordination, cooperation, and partnership between the two countries in various fields.
