Tripoli, August 20, 2026 (LANA) – The Public Prosecutor's Office has ordered the detention of a former chairman of the board of directors of Libyan Airlines in Benghazi for embezzling funds from pilgrims during 2017 and 2018.
The Public Prosecutor's Office stated on Thursday that the chairman used the company for his own personal gain, exploiting its operations to obtain benefits that resulted from the embezzlement of five million dinars received by the company under his supervision from pilgrims during 2017 and 2018.
It added that the Anti-Corruption Prosecution, within the jurisdiction of the Benghazi Court of Appeal, conducted an investigation which proved that the accused had unlawfully coerced pilgrims into paying him for their travel tickets in foreign currency, and then appropriated the proceeds for himself.
The investigation also revealed that the accused embezzled $30,000 paid to him by 33 pilots in exchange for enabling them to enroll in a specialized training course. The Public Prosecution therefore decided to detain the accused pending investigation.
