The Ninth Arab Conference of Directors of Nationality Departments kicks off in Tunisia, chaired by Libya

Tunis, August 20, 2026 (LANA) – The Ninth Arab Conference of Directors of Nationality and Civil Status Departments commenced on Wednesday at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers in Tunis, under the chairmanship of Libya.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the conference was chaired by Major General Yousef Abdullah Murad, Head of the Passports, Nationality, and Foreigners Affairs Authority, in the presence of Major General Tariq Al-Thaman, Head of the Civil Status Authority, and the heads and members of the participating Arab delegations.

The opening session included a speech by the Secretary-General of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers, Dr. Mohammed bin Ali Koman, who welcomed the participating delegations and emphasized the importance of the conference in strengthening Arab cooperation and exchanging expertise in the fields of nationality and civil status.

The conference addresses a number of important topics, most notably the development and security of national identity cards, the proposed unified Arab identity card, the protection of personal data and information security in nationality and civil status records, and a review of member states' experiences and best practices in this field.

The conference aims to support cooperation and coordination among Arab countries, improve nationality and civil status systems, and enhance the security of documents and data, thereby contributing to the development of joint security and administrative work.
