New York, August 18, 2026 (LANA) – The United States representative to the UN Security Council affirmed that significant progress has been made in Libya through her country’s continued engagement with Libyan leaders in the east and west, as well as with stakeholders across the country, based on the principle that unity should benefit all Libyans while preserving Libya’s sovereignty.
In remarks delivered during today’s Security Council session on Libya, Tuesday, she said these efforts had resulted in military leaders from the east and west agreeing on three historic, concrete steps: establishing a joint operations center in Sirte, an air training center in Misrata, and an integrated joint command.
The US representative expressed her country’s support for the full implementation of Libya’s first unified budget in 13 years, and for continued engagement with Libyan economic leadership on reforms, improving the business environment, and promoting investment.
She added that these tracks complement the roadmap established by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, noting that the United States is working closely with the Panel of Experts of the Sanctions Committee established pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution 1970, particularly on issues related to oil revenues and smuggling.
The US representative pointed out that efforts are still underway to achieve unity across the entire country and to support the Libyan-led political process and the roadmap put forward by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
