Fidan: A unified Libya will make a significant contribution to the African continent, the Islamic world, and the region.

Ankara, August 13, 2026 (LANA) – Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan affirmed that Libyan unity would not only contribute to resolving its problems but would also make a significant contribution to the entire African continent, the Islamic world, and the region.

This came in statements Fidan made to journalists on Wednesday evening, following meetings he held in Tripoli and Benghazi as part of his visit to Libya, as reported by the Turkish Anadolu Agency.

Fidan said he had formed a positive impression regarding the negotiations to unify eastern and western Libya, emphasizing that Ankara would continue to play its constructive role in this matter as a mediator.

He added that Turkey's relations with both sides in Libya in the strategic, security, and military fields, as well as political and trade relations, are "very good."

Fidan continued: "Unfortunately, we have witnessed in Libya, since the beginning of the revolution and over the past 15 years, a very turbulent period, and since 2019 we have been living in a period of calm without war."

He noted that the foreign policy pursued by Turkey under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has contributed constructively to the current period of calm in Libya.

Fidan pointed out that buildings are rising in Tripoli and Benghazi, and that Turkish construction companies are carrying out major projects in Libya, reflecting the strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

He explained that in Tripoli he met with the head of the Government of National Accord, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohammed al-Manfi, the head of the High Council of State, Mohammed Takala, and other officials.

According to the Turkish Foreign Minister, "There is strong support from the Government of National Accord in Tripoli for the reunification of Libya—the reunification of the east and west—and they are entering into negotiations, but there are certain conditions."

He added that he also visited Benghazi and met with the commander of the Libyan National Army in eastern Libya, Khalifa Haftar, his deputy, Field Marshal Saddam Haftar, the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, and the head of the Reconstruction Fund, Belqasim Haftar.

Fidan said, "These are all key players in Benghazi, and they also have significant support for the integration and unification of Libya." He noted that Turkey's continued relations with both the East and West on an equal footing, and its genuine and sincere desire for Libya's unity and territorial integrity, have earned it considerable respect.

Fidan emphasized that leaders in both eastern and western Libya recognize the potential for strength and prosperity that would arise from a unified country. He pointed to significant progress in relations with Turkey, both in Benghazi and Tripoli.

He added, "The professional, qualified, and high-quality work carried out by Turkish companies is highly appreciated by both sides, and therefore, more Turkish companies should come to Libya."

He highlighted Libya's abundant energy resources, low labor costs, and easy market access for certain products, as well as the advantages these factors offer.

The Turkish Foreign Minister concluded, "We are trying to leverage these positive relationships we have established with both the East and West to unify the two sides and establish a unified, sovereign, and independent Libya."
