The Ministry of Environment of the Government of National Unity continues to monitor the environmental impacts of the fuel tank fire in Zawiya.

Zawiya, August 12, 2026 (LANA) – For the second consecutive day, the Ministry of Environment of the Government of National Unity continued its monitoring of the environmental repercussions of the fire that broke out in one of the gasoline fuel tanks belonging to the Brega Oil Marketing Company in Zawiya. A field visit was conducted by a team from the Environmental Emergency Management Department, in cooperation with the Zawiya West Environmental Affairs Monitoring Office, to assess the effects of the incident and the measures taken in response.

According to the Ministry of Environment's official page on Wednesday, the visit included inspecting the site of the incident, evaluating the damage and the condition of the affected tank, reviewing the measures taken to control the fire and secure the site, and monitoring the environmental situation at the site and in the surrounding areas.

The team also monitored the potential environmental impacts of the emissions resulting from the fuel combustion and their possible effects on air quality, the environment, and human health. They emphasized the continuation of environmental monitoring and the implementation of necessary preventative measures to mitigate any potential impacts.

On the sidelines of the visit, a meeting was held with relevant stakeholders to discuss the environmental situation resulting from the spill near the collection tanks. The meeting explored urgent and safe solutions and procedures for addressing the spill and preventing its spread or leakage to neighboring areas, thereby mitigating its potential impact on wildlife, marine life, and natural resources.

The meeting emphasized the importance of expediting the development and implementation of a plan to address the spill and handle the pollutants in accordance with environmental regulations. Monitoring efforts will continue to ensure that pollutants do not reach the soil, water, or marine environment.

This follow-up is in line with the Minister of Environment's directives to maintain field operations and coordination among relevant entities, monitor the implementation of corrective and preventative measures, and assess the environmental impact of the incident until the situation is safely addressed and the necessary technical reports are submitted to the Ministry.

The Ministry of Environment commended the efforts and cooperation of the National Safety Authority, the Security, Safety, and Environment Department of the National Oil Corporation, the Health, Safety, and Environment Department of the Zawiya Oil Refining Company, and the Brega Oil Marketing Company in addressing the incident and mitigating its potential effects. The Ministry stressed the importance of continued joint coordination to protect the environment and natural resources.
