Central Bank Governor Requests to Be Relieved of His Post, While Takala Urges Him to Continue

Tripoli, August 10, 2026 (LANA) – Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, Naji Issa, submitted a request to be relieved of his position, according to two letters he addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the High Council of State. The reasons for the request were not disclosed, with Issa pointing to the sensitivity of the circumstances surrounding the matter.

While the Central Bank of Libya has not yet issued an official statement regarding the request, President of the High Council of State, Mohamed Takala, called on Issa, who assumed his duties as governor of the bank in October 2024, to continue carrying out his responsibilities in full, including regulating and monitoring financial transactions conducted by commercial banks, in a manner that contributes to protecting monetary and financial stability in the country.

Takala said the request comes amid the current economic circumstances facing the country, which require maintaining monetary and financial stability and ensuring the continuity of state institutions.

Takala also stressed, according to his letter circulated by media outlets, the need for the governor to continue carrying out his full responsibilities, with a focus on controlling expenditures and preventing any violations, whether concerning public spending or the use of foreign currency.

Takala explained that the request for Issa to continue performing his duties is to remain in effect until the resignation request is considered and the necessary action is taken in accordance with the constitutionally and legally prescribed procedures and authorities.
