Abdelatty: Egypt Is Moving on the Libyan File to Address the Roots of the Crisis and Preserve Its Unity

Cairo, August 9, 2026 (LANA) – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty affirmed that Egypt is moving on the Libyan file according to a clear vision aimed at addressing the roots of the crisis, rather than merely managing its repercussions.

In an interview with the “Afro News 24” website, he said that Cairo continues its intensive contacts with various Libyan parties, with the aim of encouraging them to move forward toward holding presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously, enabling the Libyan people to realize their aspirations and end the state of division.

Abdelatty pointed to the special nature of Egyptian-Libyan relations in light of the popular and historical ties between the two countries and the interconnectedness of their interests and common destiny, stressing that Cairo is aware of this and therefore always works to preserve Libya’s security, unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.

He added that Egypt is working to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation with the Libyan side in various fields, pointing to the pace of reciprocal visits, the latest of which was the visit by Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, who met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on July 27.

Abdelatty noted that Cairo is working to unify Libyan institutions and ensure the representation of all Libyan regions without exception, whether in the east, west, or south. He added that Egypt hosts meetings and consultations between the various Libyan institutions and forces in an effort to bring their views closer and build the required consensus.

Egypt also coordinates with all concerned parties, including the UN mission and regional and international partners, to unify the efforts and initiatives put forward, on the basis that the solution must be Libyan-Libyan, agreed upon, and meet the aspirations of the brotherly Libyan people, according to the Egyptian Foreign Minister.

At the regional level, Abdelatty said: “We have reactivated the trilateral mechanism of neighboring countries with Algeria and Tunisia, as the three countries most closely connected to developments in Libya,” in support of a comprehensive political settlement that preserves Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

He stressed the need for all foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters to leave the entirety of Libyan territory according to a specified timeframe, in implementation of the resolutions of international legitimacy, affirming that this withdrawal represents a fundamental condition for Libya to restore its national sovereignty and prevent the continuation of foreign interference, which has contributed to prolonging the crisis and undermining prospects for a settlement.

According to Abdelatty, Egypt’s efforts are based on interconnected tracks: advancing Libyan consensus on elections, unifying institutions, and coordinating efforts with neighboring countries and international powers, in parallel with consolidating security and ending the presence of foreign military forces.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the ultimate objective is to reach a unified Libyan state capable of safeguarding its sovereignty and achieving security, stability, and development for the brotherly Libyan people.
