Minister of Education meets Japanese Ambassador

Tripoli, August 2, 2026 (LANA) – Minister of Education, Mohamed Al-Qaryu, met today, Sunday, with the Japanese Ambassador to Libya, Shimura Izuro, to discuss prospects for strengthening bilateral cooperation in the education sector and ways to benefit from Japanese expertise in developing the educational system.

Al-Qaryu emphasized the importance of expanding international partnerships to support efforts to develop education and broaden cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He also reviewed the current state of the sector, explaining that it includes more than 2.6 million students. He noted the Ministry's success in addressing a number of challenges, including providing textbooks, enhancing examination governance, and implementing the project to establish 1,500 model schools, of which approximately 360 have been completed in the first phase.

The meeting addressed ways to benefit from the Japanese experience in digital transformation, educational technology, and human resource development. Discussions also focused on supporting Libya's participation in international studies such as TIMSS, PIRLS, and PISA, which would enhance its standing in education quality indicators.

For his part, the Japanese ambassador commended the Ministry of Education's vision for developing the sector, emphasizing his country's commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Ministry and its readiness to coordinate directly with the International Cooperation Office to implement partnership programs.
