Libya and Nigeria affirm their commitment to strengthening African coordination and commend the reopening of the Sahel and Sahara Community headquarters in Tripoli

Addis Ababa, July 29, 2026 (LANA) – The Libyan and Nigerian sides emphasized the importance of continued consultation and coordination within the African Union's bodies and institutions to address regional and international challenges in a spirit of solidarity and effective partnership. They also commended the reopening of the headquarters of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) in Tripoli, considering it a step that contributes to strengthening and consolidating joint African action.

This came during a meeting between the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity, Taher Al-Baour, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bianca Odumejo-Ojukwu, on the sidelines of the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 28 and 29, 2026.

The two sides reviewed the course of bilateral relations between Libya and Nigeria and ways to develop them to serve common interests, particularly in the political and economic fields, in addition to strengthening cooperation and exchange between relevant institutions in both countries.

The meeting also addressed a number of issues of common interest on the African scene, and exchanged views on the most prominent challenges facing the continent, emphasizing the importance of intensifying coordination among African countries to support development efforts and enhance security and stability.
