Massad Boulos: Representatives from eastern and western Libya have overcome their differences for the sake of the nation

Tripoli, July 27, 2026 (LANA) – Senior Advisor to US President Donald Trump on Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, stated that representatives from eastern and western Libya have set aside their differences for the sake of the country, as evidenced by the progress made in negotiations between them. He indicated that this reflects a genuine desire to reach solutions that strengthen Libya's unity and stability.

In written responses to questions from the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Boulos added that US diplomatic efforts in Libya have achieved gradual and tangible improvement since July 2025. He explained that among the most prominent steps achieved are the unified development program, the approval of the unified budget, and the gathering of military forces from the east and west of the country in Sirte to participate in the Flintlock 26 exercises. He considered these steps to be contributing to building trust between the military forces.

The US presidential advisor called for continued work towards establishing unified governance between the east and west of the country, emphasizing that unity is the foundation of legitimacy and the holding of democratic elections. He stressed that any successful political initiative must be inclusive and encompass all Libyan components, regions, and institutions.

Boulos explained that the United States supports the roadmap led by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and is working in coordination with UN Special Representative Hanna Tetteh. He emphasized that the US role complements the UN process, not replaces it, and that the future of Libya must be determined by the Libyans themselves.

He noted that the final details of any agreement concerning the unification of Libyan institutions remain the prerogative of the Libyans, and affirmed that Washington continues to engage with various parties to develop viable proposals that garner broad support.

Boulos denied that the US initiative in Libya is driven by international competition with Russia or China, clarifying that the goal is to support a unified Libya capable of strengthening its stability, protecting its sovereignty, and expanding its economic opportunities.

Regarding the oil sector, Boulos affirmed that the United States' interest extends beyond ensuring the flow of energy; it also includes supporting the Libyan economy in general. He pointed out that improving revenue management and resource allocation contributes to creating the conditions for achieving lasting peace and stability.

He added that developments in the oil sector, particularly the efforts of the National Oil Corporation, have contributed to increased interest from global American companies in investing in Libya, including developing existing fields and opening new avenues for exploration.

Regarding his recent visit to Misrata, Boulos said he met with the Council of Elders and elected municipal leaders, emphasizing that their views are of great importance in supporting the success of the municipal elections and achieving a stable and unified Libya.

The US President's advisor affirmed his country's commitment to continuing communication with all Libyans in various regions to support a Libyan-led political process aimed at achieving stability and building unified institutions.
