Tripoli, 19 July 2026 (Lana)—The United Nations Development Program in Libya (UNDP) emphasized the important role of justice and the rule of law in preventing conflict, rebuilding trust, and establishing sustainable peace in Libya.

In a statement issued by the UNDP on the occasion of International Criminal Justice Day, on July 17, the UNDP stated that strengthening the rule of law is a cornerstone of the UNDP's support toward a stable, resilient nation.

“Through our "Strengthening the Rule of Law and Justice in Libya" project, we partner with key national counterparts, including the Attorney General's Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, and civil society, to pave the way toward effective, inclusive, and responsive institutions," UNDP said.

“Our work is deeply people-centered—focusing on restoring trust in public institutions and ensuring equal access to justice. This includes: Empowering the families of missing persons to participate in transitional justice processes actively. Advancing juvenile justice to ensure safety, rehabilitation, and human rights safeguards for youth in line with international standards. Expanding community-oriented security and legal aid services to protect the most vulnerable,” UNDP added.

The statement stressed that justice is not only about combating impunity. It is about building solid local foundations, addressing root causes of conflict, and empowering individuals to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.

“Strengthening justice today ensures a more resilient tomorrow,” it added.
