Arab League Supports Completing the Political Process Under Libyan Leadership

Cairo - July 18, 2026 (LANA) – Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy affirmed on Saturday the League's full support for completing the political process under purely Libyan leadership and ownership, leading to the unification of national institutions and the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

This came during the Secretary-General's meeting with the Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, at the Arab League headquarters.

In a press statement, the League said that Fahmy emphasized the League's principles of preserving Libya's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, the necessity of the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries, and the rejection of any external interference that could hinder progress on the political and security tracks.

The statement added that the meeting reviewed the latest developments in Libya and the crisis in Sudan, as well as ways to coordinate regional and international efforts regarding both.

The statement explained that the Secretary-General listened to a presentation by Mr. Paulus on the US assessment of the developments in Libya and the crisis in Sudan, and the US proposals for addressing each issue according to its specific circumstances.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed on the importance of continuing coordination and joint work between the League of Arab States and the US Secretariat, and exchanging views and assessments regularly, in order to contribute to advancing the political process in Libya, supporting efforts to end the ongoing war in Sudan, alleviating human suffering, and consolidating security and stability in the region, according to the statement.
