Dbeibah Affirms Libyans Are the True Source of Legitimacy for Any Political Process

Tripoli, July 18, 2026 (LANA) – Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdulhamid Dbeibah, affirmed on Saturday that the legitimacy of any path concerning Libya's future derives from the will and conviction of the Libyan people, not from closed-door meetings, initiatives, or understandings. He announced his intention to address the Libyan people to present a comprehensive picture of the proposed initiatives for resolving the crisis and to clarify the government's position on them.

During the fourth regular cabinet meeting of 2026 in Zliten on Saturday, Dbeibah stated, "The government will not make any decision concerning the country's future without the participation of the Libyan people." He indicated that his upcoming address will cover the various proposed initiatives, clarifying what the government sees as opportunities for progress and what it has reservations about in order to safeguard the nation's interests.

The Prime Minister stressed that Libyans are the stakeholders and the true source of legitimacy for any political process, affirming that the government will proceed with what they accept and will not accept what they reject.

He added that after informing the public of all proposed initiatives, the government will listen to diverse opinions through a responsible national dialogue involving youth, women, municipalities, academics, social leaders, businesspeople, political parties, intellectuals, and civil society organizations, aiming to reach a unified vision that reflects the aspirations of Libyans regarding any initiative.

Dbeibah emphasized that national solutions can only be built through compromise and courage, explaining that compromise is a virtue when it is for the sake of the nation, while courage lies in making the right decision.
