Pulbished on:

Tunis 15 July 2026 (Lana) United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has set the first week of August as the deadline for resuming the meeting of the Smaller Convening tasked with addressing the first two milestone of the UN-facilitated roadmap, to finalize the agreement on the legal framework for the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The UNSMIL hosted, yesterday at its office in Tunis, the sixth meeting of the Smaller Convening, where the participants agreed to adopt a new mechanism to reach a consensus on the chairperson of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), following delays in implementing the previously agreed-upon selection process.

The delegates also worked on drafting the terms of the final agreement, building on understandings reached during previous sessions regarding the legal framework for presidential and legislative elections.

Having incorporated the majority of the agreed points into the draft text, participants scheduled a follow-up meeting for the first week of August to finalize the remaining outstanding issues.
